Guide — Eco-friendly umbrella

Eco-friendly umbrella: how to choose a truly sustainable umbrella?

Recycled materials, sustainable production, responsible end of life: the complete guide to consuming better in the rain.

The problem

10 million umbrellas thrown away every year in France

In France, 10 million umbrellas are bought and thrown away every year. 95% of them are made in Asia using non-recyclable materials, and their average lifespan is less than 2 years. This is a massive environmental issue that is often underestimated.

At Beau Nuage, we decided to change the game by designing umbrellas that last longer and whose fabric is entirely made from recycled plastic bottles (rPET® material certified by Control Union). Each Beau Nuage umbrella gives a second life to more than 6 plastic bottles of 500 ml.

Criteria to check before buying

Certified materials

Look for certifications such as rPET (recycled polyester), GRS (Global Recycled Standard), or OEKO-TEX. A simple "eco-friendly" claim without certification is often just greenwashing.

Built to last

An eco-friendly umbrella should last at least 5 years. Check the warranty, frame strength, and finishing quality. A durable product is always more sustainable than a “green” product thrown away after 6 months.

Responsible end of life

What happens when the product is damaged? The best brands offer spare parts, repair programs, or donate unsold items to charities instead of destroying them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about eco-friendly umbrellas

Is an umbrella made from recycled materials as strong as a regular umbrella?

Yes — rPET fabric (recycled polyester) has the same technical properties as virgin polyester: same waterproofing, same UV resistance, and the same flexibility. Plastic recycling into textile fibers is a mature and certified technology. Our rPET umbrellas pass the same durability tests as conventional umbrellas.

How much does a quality eco-friendly umbrella really cost?

A high-quality eco-friendly umbrella typically costs between €40 and €80. This is more expensive than a €10 supermarket umbrella — but that one will be thrown away in 6 months. In cost per use, a Beau Nuage umbrella used for 5 years is much cheaper, while having a significantly lower environmental impact.

How can you recycle a broken umbrella?

It is indeed difficult because umbrellas combine metal, plastic, and fabric. Steel frames can be taken to recycling centers (metal waste). Polyester fabric may sometimes be accepted by textile recycling programs. The best solution remains to buy a durable umbrella from the start — and repair it instead of throwing it away.
